Deciduous medium-sized trees; branches gray-brown, thick, stout, branchlets with short hairs.
Levaes somewhat thicker, cordate-ovate, 10–20 cm long, 7–15 cm wide, acute at apex, obtuse, rounded or cordate at base, rough-serrate, often deeply 3–5-lobed, hairy above, more hairy beneath; stipules broadly lanceolate, acute at apex; petioles 2–10 cm long.
Male catkins cylindrical, 4–8 cm long, with many Flowers, the stalks 2–4 cm long, pendulous; perianth 4-lobed, hairy; stamens 4. Female Flowers in globose heads, hairy; ovary with fleshy pedicel, style long filiform.
Aggregate fruit globose, about 2 cm across, the perianth and bracts persistent, clustered together; achenes red at maturity.
